New York Yankees slugger Anthony Rizzo was “guest manager” for the team on Wednesday, and his former manager, David Ross, left him a hilarious text in response to it.
The Yankees are currently on cruise control, as they clinched the AL East and already secured themselves a first-round playoff bye. As a result, manager Aaron Boone decided to have some fun and name Anthony Rizzo as the club’s “guest manager” for their Wednesday contest against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Overall, things went very well for the Yankees during the game, as they would go on to defeat Toronto by an 8-3 final score. Rizzo also provided the fans with some fun antics, but Aaron Judge ended up taking the spotlight away from him when he blasted his 61st home run of the season — tying Roger Maris’ team home run record in the process.
In fact, Judge’s historic home run ended up getting the attention of his former manager, David Ross. While speaking with the media about Rizzo’s managerial debut, Ross had this to say:
“I texted him last night and was like, well, you managed the 61st home run for Aaron Judge. That’s a pretty good resumé.”
David Ross’ text to Rizzo was nothing short of hilarious.
It’s hard not to like funny moments like this in baseball. Ross, who is both a former teammate and manager of Rizzo, did have a point, however. Rizzo’s managerial debut just so happened to be the night where Judge made both Yankee and baseball history. That is something that will forever be linked to Rizzo’s time leading the dugout, and that’s simply a very very cool fact.
It’s great that Rizzo and Ross have kept a strong connection even after the former was traded to the Yankees. Who knows? Maybe when Rizzo’s career as a player is over, he can use Ross as a reference to land a manager job due to their friendship off the field. As Ross stated in his text, he does have Judge’s 61st on his resumé, after all.
