After year of flirting with a trade, the Milwaukee Brewers are finally moving star closer Josh Hader to the San Diego Padres.

The Padres were a rumored destination for quite some time, as they weren’t thrilled with the recent work of their bullpen, and ninth-inning man Taylor Rogers.

Despite leading the NL Central, the Brewers felt confident in their ability to move Hader due to a bullpen featuring Devin Williams, an NL All-Star and the likes closer-in-waiting in Milwaukee.

Williams has a 1.59 ERA on his own right. The Padres have shown a willingness to make a big splash in the past, and despite making offers for Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto, may settle for Hader as their rather large trade deadline acquisition (assuming they don’t have more in the works).

Brewers Get

RP, Taylor Rogers

LHP, Robert Gasser

OF, Esteury Ruiz

RHP, Dinelson Lamet

That is one heck of a haul, but what else would one expect for a pitcher of Hader’s quality. However, San Diego could still afford Juan Soto or another big bat should they wish.

Robert Hassell III, CJ Abrams and Mackenzie Gore are all still San Diego Padres. That’s relatively impressive considering they just acquired arguably the best closer in all of baseball.

Hader is signed through the 2023 season, as he has one more year of arbitration, per Spotrac.
