The Chicago Cubs have been having a difficult season, but an MLB insider shared they may make some major changes to the roster in the offseason.

The Chicago Cubs are having a difficult season and currently sit last in the NL Central standings. They’re below .500, but the team may have major upgrades through the offseason and become a team to look out for.

MLB insider Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic believes Chicago will get one of the top free agent shortstops.

“This is the offseason now where they’ve got to start spending again. They’ve got to get – and I believe they will get – one of the big shortstops. And they need to do some work around the edges, for sure. They’ve got some promising things happening.” – Ken Rosenthal, via The Athletic Baseball Show: A show about MLB

The Cubs aren’t in dire need of another shortstop, but signing a big free agent would help them regardless.

The Cubs would benefit from signing a big free agent

Chicago’s current shortstop Nico Hoerner has been one of the best players in Chicago this season. He’s hitting .295/.337/.412 for an OPS of .749.

He’s also one of the best defenders in MLB. He has the ninth-best FanGraphs defensive rating (10.9) among all shortstops. He also has a WAR of 2.8. He’s undoubtedly a good player, but the Cubs could still benefit from signing a major free agent.

Three shortstops entering free agency next season, Dansby Swanson, Xander Bogaerts and Trea Turner have better WAR than Hoerner. The three have been reliable players to their respective teams. Signing them could undoubtedly make the Cubs better, even if it means unfortunately replacing Hoerner.
