Juan Soto trade rumors started flying after he rejected a $440MM offer from the Nationals but Washington will reportedly make one last-ditch effort.
On Saturday, the MLB world got rocked with Juan Soto rumors as reports indicated that the 23-year-old star had rejected a 15-year, $440MM offer from the Washington Nationals, which was then going to lead to the club — one known for parting with stars — exploring trade options.
Before you continue figuring out all of the best fits around the other 29 teams in baseball for Juan Soto, however, you might want to pump the brakes.
MLB insider Hector Gomez reported early on Sunday morning that the Nationals weren’t done trying to negotiate would Soto. Instead, they’ll make one final offer to the superstar right-fielder and, if he does not accept, he’ll be traded.
Juan Soto rumors: Nationals will make final offer before trading superstar
While the $440MM figure looks astronomical, it’s actually a low-ball offer for a player as young as Soto and with his immense talent. This is a player who is already among the best in baseball and has room to get better.
This is, unfortunately, par for the course when it comes to the Nationals. Whether it’s been Bryce Harper, Max Scherzer or otherwise, they’ve routinely tried to play hardball and not pay market value to keep their stars. And obviously, that has come back to bite them a time or two.
We don’t know what the final offer in a last-ditch effort to keep Soto will look like but, if they don’t come correct, then he won’t be on the Nationals for all that much longer, even if he isn’t dealt before the Aug. 2 MLB Trade Deadline.
