Cincinnati Reds legend Joey Votto enjoyed chatting with a young Cubs fan on Thursday night, and even hit a home run for him.

Wrigley Field is a cathedral of baseball for a reason. It’s where dreams come true, even when the Cubs are bad.

This season, Chicago’s North Side team is not very good. It’s a sad sight, but the rebuilding Cubs are likely at least a year away. They will sell at this year’s deadline.

Yet, Wrigley still draws a number of dedicated Chicago baseball fans, if only for the atmosphere and experience of watching a game in one of the best stadiums in all of baseball. Votto understands that history, and his responsibility to pass on memories from one generation to the next.

The kid, who was wearing a Cubs jersey at the time, might want to trade that in for a Reds’ No. 19. Votto just made his night — no, perhaps his year — by chatting with him in the front row and delivering a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

Ironically enough, Chicago did defeat the Reds on Thursday night by the final score of 15-7. Votto, however, was 3-for-5 with that solo home run.

He also made a lifelong fan.
