The Boston Red Sox will see right-hander Brayan Bello make his MLB debut on Wednesday.

To help combat some of their pitching woes, the Boston Red Sox are calling up Brayan Bello.

The Dominican right-hander is the top pitching prospect in the Red Sox organization. He is the No. 4 overall prospect in Boston’s farm system, as well as the No. 74 overall prospect, per MLB. On the year, Bello has a 10-4 record in 14 starts with a 2.33 ERA split between AA Portland and AAA Worcester. At 23-years-old, Bello will make his MLB debut vs. the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday.

Mass Live Sports’ Katie Morrison confirmed Bello will start vs. Tampa Bay. Welcome to the show!

Boston Red Sox call up top pitching prospect Brayan Bello to start on Wednesday

Per Bello’s MLB.com scouting report, he is a three-pitch pitcher (fastball, slider, change-up) with the potential to be a front-line starter in the league. While his fastball is getting up there in velocity, it tends to come in straight, suggesting he may need to develop a two-seamer with sinking action down the line. He also is seen to have a plus change-up and a quality slider as well.

The biggest concern regarding Bello is control. If he can keep his velocity up and still have good command of his two other offerings, Bello can develop into quite the starter for Boston. His meteoric rise up the Red Sox’s prospect rankings has been tremendous, but is he ready for a big-league lineup at this time? Bello’s ETA for MLB was this season, so it is his time to answer the call.

Though Boston may be two games up on everyone in the AL Wild Card race, the Red Sox still trail the arch rival New York Yankees by a staggering 13 games. Catching New York may not happen, but it is important for the Red Sox to keep two of their other rivals of note in check in Tampa Bay and the Toronto Blue Jays, who would be the other AL Wild Card teams if the season ended today.

This is a big spot for Bello on Wednesday, but he has prepared his whole life for this big moment.
