A Detroit fan wore a Tigers-themed Patrick Mahomes jersey to a Kansas City Royals game, and KC supporters didn’t know what to make of it.
Mahomes was a Tigers draft pick back in the day, but a Detroit fan still repping the Texas Tech product has to be a troll. If not, then I’m just as confused as these Kansas City sports fans.
In an alternate universe, Mahomes could’ve been a Detroit Tiger. Granted, in this reality, Mahomes had a far greater future in football. But in high school, the future standout QB was a three-sport athlete, and turned plenty of heads on the baseball diamond.
“With Patrick, it was as simple as ‘here’s a kid who looks like he’s going to play football BUT…let’s be that team that started to build the relationship so that if he wants to play baseball 2-4 years down the road, we’ve got our foot in the door,” Tim Grieve, longtime scout of the Detroit Tigers, said.
The Tigers selected Mahomes in the 36th round, so they didn’t exactly waste a lot of capital.

Thankfully for KC fans, Mahomes would instead go to Texas Tech and play football, where he would excel enough to be a first-round draft pick of the Chiefs. The rest, as we know, is history.
Mahomes is one of the best quarterbacks in football, and signed a half-billion dollar contract to stay with the Chiefs for the majority of his career, if not all of it.
But for at least one day, the Tigers dared to dream.
“He’s the type of prospect where you say let’s get our uniform on this guy and figure the rest out later,” Grieve continued. “With any of these kids it’s always a dream.”
Oh, what could have been.
