Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Kenley Jansen had his warm-up routine cut short by the home plate umpire during Saturday’s game against the San Diego Padres.

The Atlanta Braves were in San Diego to take on the Padres for a four-game series. Both teams split the first two games and the Braves looked to close out a 5-2 win on Saturday, Apr. 16. But, there was some drama.

Manager Brian Snitker called upon Kenley Jansen to get three outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Jansen’s warm-up routine was cut short after three pitches by home plate umpire Bill Miller.

Jansen had to be separated by Snitker and third base coach Ron Washington. Miller at one point stood in front of Atlanta catcher Manny Piña to prevent Jansen from throwing any additional warm-up pitches.

As the Bally Sports commentary team said, the time allotted between innings had run out, and Jansen had only been able to get three throws off before being halted by Miller.

Piña explained the situation during a post game interview with Bally Sports.

Snitker said during his postgame press conference that there was a delay in Jansen’s warmup due to the pitcher getting his glove checked for sticky substances before taking the mound. Snitker’s comments on Jansen can be found at the 2:15 mark of the below video, courtesy of Bally Sports.

Despite the disagreement, Jansen closed out the game with just 11 pitches. He struck out Padres third baseman Manny Machado on six pitches, got second baseman Jake Cronenworth to ground out and forced designated hitter Luke Voit to pop out to secure Atlanta’s 5-2 win.

With this game in the books, Jansen now has a 6.75 ERA and two saves through four games.
