Freddie Freeman was so caught off guard by the Braves trading for Matt Olson that he “didn’t really speak for a couple of hours.”
The breakup between Freddie Freeman and the Braves was an emotional time for the player and the city of Atlanta.
It didn’t help that the Braves decided to move on from Freeman before telling him they were going to agree to a trade for Oakland A’s first baseman Matt Olson.
Regardless of Atlanta’s reasoning for going in a different direction, Freeman was definitely stunned by the news.
Freddie Freeman didn’t speak for hours after Matt Olson trade
“The emotions were all over the place, to be honest. I got the news when I was at workout that the trade had happened. I had no idea that that was going to happen,” Freeman said, per Grant McAuley. “I didn’t really speak for a couple of hours.”
Freeman told reporters he was “blindsided” and “hurt” by Atlanta making the trade for his replacement.
Olson is younger than Freeman at 27 years old. He got an eight-year contract worth $168 million. By bringing him in, the Braves essentially told Freeman they were done with him.
Instead, the Dodgers came through and picked up the first baseman on a six-year, $160 million contract.
Now he’s back home in Southern California for good, even though it’s clear he’ll need some time to get over the split with Atlanta.
